NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The trial of a man arrested at an anti-police brutality protest on the Brooklyn Bridge back in April began Tuesday.

Edward ‘Noche’ Diaz was joined by supporters before his trial began at Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Forty-two people were arrested during the April 14 protest. Two officers were injured in clashes with demonstrators during the protest.

Diaz’s supporters claim all others arrested during the protest have had their cases settled without trial and Diaz is being singled out, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported.

Diaz faces a year in jail if convicted of disorderly conduct and obstructing police charges.

“What kind of a society is it that so many can be gunned down, choked to death at any time, in the streets or in their homes, but when people step out of their homes and into the streets, they face jail time,” Diaz said. “Which side are you on? This must end.”

Diaz is well known for his role in leading anti-police brutality protests, Schuck reported.

Diaz also faces two charges in Manhattan related to other anti-police brutality protests.
